At MENTOR MD DC, we encourage programs, mentors, and mentees to find new and innovative ways to engage with each other. This February is Black History Month, so we worked to bring you all new activities to do and reflect on African American culture, history, and community!
1. DC Public Library’s Black History Month events!

DC Public Libraries have planned an array of events that center on black history. From quilt crafting, S.T.E.M. seminars and poetry showcases, you’ll be able to immerse yourself in plenty of educational activities.
2. PG County Parks – Black History

Prince George’s County Parks is offering a mix of in person, hybrid and virtual classes surrounding black historical figures, books and more! Join them this weekend for book discussions and fantastic panels.
3. Black History Month Film Series!

In celebration of the Museum’s designation as a National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom site by the National Park Service, we are hosting three films in the 1884 Roundhouse on the topics of Slavery, the Underground Railroad, and freedom. The three movies this month, Amistad, Harriet, and Selma, spotlight the harsh reality of slavery, racial discrimination, and show the heroes that persevered. Admission is FREE.
4. HBCU Benefit Concert ft. Morgan State University Choir

The Student Empowerment Ministry of First Baptist Church of Guilford is hosting the 4th annual HBCU Benefit Concert to help raise funds for our scholarship fund. This year’s special guest will be the Morgan State University Choir. All donations can be submitted using one of the 3 methods detailed in the image below. Online donations can be submitted here. 5. RUN for Black History with Pacers!

Join Pacers Running, Yours Truly, Asics, and Athletic Brewing Company (ABC) for a run or walk through DC celebrating Black History! Meet at Yours Truly at 10 AM. Complimentary shirts will be provided by Asics along with complimentary mimosas from Yours Truly and ABC non-alcoholic cocktails after the run and walk.
6. Bring your mentee or mentoring program on a tour of the African American Civil War Museum

8. Free Black History Month films from Chesepeak Filmmakers!

The Chesapeake Film Festival (CFF) announces part two of our bi-monthly series, “Making Imagination Reel,” showcasing outstanding films featured in the 2021 Festival. Part 2 recognizes Black History Month 2022 and extends the celebration through March with five extraordinary films and interviews with their filmmakers.

9. Caroline County NAACP Black History Month Essay Contest

Caroline County! Prompt your mentee to submit an essay. The Caroline County branch of the NAACP is hosting a Black History Month essay contest. The deadline is February 28th

10. Easton’s Hill Community Walking Tour

Take your mentoring program on a group walking tour of the historical Easton Community. Easton’s Hill Community has been home to free African Americans since the 1780s, more than 80 years before the Civil War ended in 1865. The history of this community was obscured by time until researchers began to unravel the mysteries of this extraordinary neighborhood.
