Mentoring vs. Coaching
August 4, 2022
A couple of weeks ago, our staff at MENTOR MD | DC had a great discussion on the differences between mentoring vs. coaching! Here’s the simple definition: “A mentor is someone who shares their knowledge, skills, and/or experience to help another to develop and grow. A coach is someone who provides guidance to a client on their goals and helps them reach their full potential.” A few of our team members decided to share our perspectives. We all firmly believe that while different, when both are employed, they can work in synergy and provide a great view to youth development!

What is the difference between a mentor, a coach, and a teacher? Or if we look at them as verbs: What is the difference between mentoring, coaching, and teaching? The dictionary would say one thing, the youth development field would say another, and every child would say another thing yet. Whose definition matters most? Or what qualities in all three of these figures in a child’s life matters most?

Mentoring is a long-term relationship with another individual where the mentor shares their knowledge and experience and guides the individual through life. While Coach helps an individual reach a specific goal by following a strict schedule. It is more rigid and rule-following than Mentoring, where it depends on the mentee and how they would like to change.

Mentoring vs. Coaching! I believe that while they both have similarities, they both can be used in different, strategic ways. Mentoring has the capacity to elevate our youth in all facets of their growth, and it can be one of the best relationship-building tools! No matter where you are or how it’s done, mentoring never stops – and it can be done by almost anyone in your life. Coaching is goal-oriented and results drive, and a great way to support any milestones and goals that you pursue. Both take a level of understanding that utilizes patience, support, and commitment!
