Youth Advocacy Day Reflections
April 19, 2024Maryland Youth Advisory Council
I had the privilege of representing the council at the MENTOR MD|DC & MOST’s Youth Advocacy Day by presenting about the legislative process, answering questions, and facilitating. Through my 4 years of advocacy experience, I have to say that this group of leaders has to be some of the most vibrant and passionate I have come across. The environment was welcoming and supportive, giving me a sense of community. The judgement free event uplifted young leaders and was able to inspire everyone in the room. I am so grateful to have had this opportunity and look forward to working with MENTOR MD|DC & MOST in the future.

The MENTOR MD| DC & MOST State Advocacy Day was a wonderful opportunity for youth across the state, including myself, to connect, meet legislators, and advocate for what we believe would best support our communities. The most impactful aspect of the advocacy day was the fact that we got to share our experiences. I recall me and my group sharing with one of the legislator’s staff about the Kids Code bill and how various social media platforms have impacted us and the youth in our spaces. I have had an amazing time meeting youth from across the state, hearing perspectives outside my country, and getting the chance to present on the legislative process; a process I continue to learn about through experiences such as this.

My participation in Youth Advocacy Day was nothing short of transformative. Walking into the event, I felt a mix of nerves and excitement, unsure of what the day held. However, as I engaged with the youth participants, I was immediately struck by their passion and determination, and my nerves disappeared. Witnessing them courageously advocate for change left a profound impact on me.
Their energy was infectious, fueling my own commitment to advocate on their behalf. Interacting with the youth provided me with invaluable insights into the challenges they face and the importance of amplifying their voices. It was humbling to see them address state legislators and their staff with such poise and conviction.
Moreover, I was deeply impressed by how the state legislators and their staff were so open and receptive to hearing our concerns. Their willingness to engage with us demonstrated a genuine commitment to understanding the issues affecting young people and working towards solutions.
Overall, Youth Advocacy Day reaffirmed my belief in the power of youth and the urgent need to address their concerns. It was a truly inspiring experience that has motivated me to continue advocating for youth empowerment and social change.
Lastly, the MENTOR MD|DC team will share a video from our friend Tyler and his experience at Youth Advocacy Day!
