Celebrate Black History Month

February is Black History Month so let’s celebrate with our mentees! Showcase to your mentees, no matter their race and ethnicity, all the life changing work Black individuals have done throughout America and globally! Not sure where to find the information you could share? No worries, we’ve listed some great resources on this page!

Here are some ways you can celebrate Black History Month!

Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by Black Americans. However, during Black History Month, we tend to cast a spotlight on the same historic figures each year. This year expand your mentee’s knowledge about other historical black figures. Here‘s where you can start!

Write a blog post with the theme of Black history month as the topic! We’d love to read it and share it with our audience. All submissions can be emailed to Communications@mentormddc.org. Please on the subject line write ‘BHM Blog Post‘. In the body of the email please include, First & Last name, the program you’re affiliated with, and your programs social media handles. Lastly, don’t forget your personal social media handles! (if comfortable with sharing.) Check out previous blog posts here!

As we recognize the importance of Black History Month and its impact on our community, it’s essential to consider how mentoring programs can support the development of Black youth. Join us this February as MENTOR MD|DC host a training on Combatting White Saviorism. Participants will explore what white saviorism looks like and the harmful impact it has on youth.

Register for the training on Feb. 22nd here!

Read MENTOR Maryland | DC’s Former Executive Director, Sadiq Ali’s, article on 28 different ways you and your mentee can celebrate Black History Month! These great ideas can be useful when figuring out what to do with your mentee throughout the year, not just in February, so make sure to check it out here!

Celebrate youth voices! View the winners of the MLK Mentoring Challenge Awards here! This can lead to a great conversation about the importance of mentoring and how countless Black Americans, including Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., continue to be a great example for our youth to look up to.

This Black History Month, as we continue to support & elevate Black youth, we must ensure that mentoring amplifies inclusivity & respect. Check out MENTOR National’s resources on privilege, racial justice, and social capital, as they relate to the mentoring field here!
