Montgomery Collaboration Council: Combatting White Saviorism in Mentors and Mentoring Programs

July 7, 2021 @ 11:00 am - 12:30 pm

Youth in mentoring relationships and programs can become indirectly or directly impacted by the known syndrome of “white saviorism.” That is, the act of a white person helping a person of color in a self-serving manner to appear noble or superior. In this interactive web-based training, participants will identify and understand different underlying beliefs of people of color and how white people can genuinely help through empathy and genuine support.

Participants attending this training will:

  • Summarize the strength-based approach to youth development.
  • Illustrate the developmental relationship framework in adult-youth relationships.
  • Differentiate the impact and opportunities of white saviorism on youth trauma and awareness.
  • Evaluate the practices of their program using the EEP for ideals that mirror white saviorism.
